The Night Shifts Episode Two

It was a different kind of night for Dr Nat who has never been pampered by a woman before. All his life, he was used to been mistreated by his wife. He has never experienced true happiness in the hands of any woman apart from his mother. He has been mistreated for such a long time and he has come to accept mistreatment as a normal thing.

So, it was a pleasant surprise to him when Chi Chi pampered him at the hospital ward. Chi Chi brought a lot of good things for Dr Nat. It was like a date night, but the only difference was that it was taking place at hospital other than a restaurant. Chi Chi had gone to the restaurant to buy delicious fried rice and chicken before coming to the hospital to see Dr Nat. She bought food for the two of them. She also bought wine and brand new glass cups.

When Dr Nat entered the hospital ward to see her, she had already set the food on the table and the first thing they did was to eat. After taking a good look at Dr Nat earlier in the afternoon when she had come for checkup, she had concluded that the man was not feeding well.

“Food is the first thing that makes you live a healthy life. If you are not eating properly, you will not live well. It looks like you have been eating a lot of junks. Don’t you bring food to work? Like packing food in a food flask so you could eat when you are hungry.” Chi Chi asked when they had started eating. Dr Nat was eating aggressively. He can’t remember when last he had such delicious meal filled with meat.

“I’m not allowed to take food out of the house. Everything I want to eat must be eaten at home. My wife said she does not want me to take food to work so that I will not share it with any woman. She is a jealous woman who does not want me to talk to any woman out there. And when she wants to give me money to buy food, she gives me small amount that can only buy me junk snacks and soft drinks. That is why I’m looking unhealthy. If you see me when I was yet to get married, you will not believe your eyes. I used to look very fresh and plump.” Dr Nat said with a gentle smile.

“This is strange. I have not met your wife but it is obvious she is not a good person. How can she be treating her husband like this?” Chi Chi asked. She opened the bottle of red wine and poured some for Dr Nat and also poured for herself.

“I’m so happy tonight. The kindness you are showing me, I have never received it before. Look at me eating fried rice and chicken. Look at me drinking wine. This night is my best night ever.” Dr Nat said. He was almost shouting. Chi Chi was so happy to see some smiles on his face.

“It makes me glad that you are finally a happy man. Seeing you happy is my ultimate objective. If you are happy, I will be happy. You are such a hardworking man and you deserve the good things of life. I have come into your life to reset your brain so that you will start seeing yourself in positive light.” Chi Chi said. She was being strategic. She wants to gain access into Dr Nat’s heart through a gradual process. She has started with food and she would like to make sure the man never lacks good food to eat at work.

“From today onward, I will be bringing you food at work. I will always pack enough food to last you the whole day. I will make sure you never lack good food and even expensive wine like this one. Wait and see, within a few days of eating proper meals, you will become plumb and even your skin colour will change and start shinning.” Chi Chi said with a smile.

“I can’t wait. I have said you should use me and do whatever you want. I didn’t know I would ever be happy. I have gotten used to suffering such that I stopped looking for happiness. But it is even less than 24 hours after you came into my life and I have started being happy.” Dr Nat said. Chi Chi used a white towel to wipe his mouth for him after he finished eating and drinking his wine. He felt like a king. Chi Chi also held water in a bowl for him to wash his hand which was stained with oil.

“My goodness! I never knew women like you still existed in this world. My wife had made me to hate women. She has brought me up to look at other women like trash and to look at her like the queen. I used to think apart from her, there were no other women in the world. She brainwashed me into thinking I cannot get happiness elsewhere apart from her. But she never gave me happiness.” Dr Nat said.

“Don’t worry, I’m here for you. I noticed you don’t have a good phone. I saw the phone you were using in the afternoon, and I felt sad for you. When I was coming here, I went to the phone store to get you an iPhone.” Chi Chi said as she handed over the new phone to Dr Nat who was overwhelmed with joy. When he took the phone, he did not know how to operate it because it was the first time he was touching a smart phone.

“I’m so lucky to have met you today. I think it is God who sent you my way. Look at all the good things I’m getting from you and it is less than 24 hours since we met.” Dr Nat said as he jumped up and hugged Chi Chi.

“I see you don’t know how to use it. Don’t worry, I will teach you tonight. By tomorrow morning, you will be conversant with the buttons.” Chi Chi said.

“I also bought you some clothes and shoes. I noticed that your clothes looked old. When I saw you earlier today, you did not look like a medical doctor at all. You looked like a house boy. Make sure you wear all these good clothes I bought for you from tomorrow. You deserve the good things of life.” Chi Chi said.

“I don’t know what to say again. Please, can you always come here every night? I promise to always come here for a nightshift even if I’m not on shift. Since I met you, I have been feeling happy and I don’t want that happiness to go away.” Dr Nat confessed.

“Of course, if you want me to come, I will. I will always be here for you.” Chi Chi said. She reached out and held Dr Nat’s hand and led him to the hospital bed. Dr Nat was confused as he didn’t understand why Chi Chi was leading him to the bed. But Chi Chi knew what she wanted and she was going to get it on the bed.
