Back in 2013, a Chinese factory worker named Xie Wei went through a mind-blowing medical procedure to save his severed hand. After a serious accident, doctors managed to keep his hand alive by temporarily attaching it to his left ankle, using blood vessels from his leg to keep it supplied with blood.
Though the hand stayed warm, it was completely numb—no nerves were connected, only the blood vessels. Xie said his leg felt pretty normal, just a bit heavier than usual.
A month later, surgeons were able to successfully reattach the hand to his arm. After leaving the hospital, Xie could twist his wrist a little but still couldn’t move his fingers. Doctors told him it would take around six months for the nerves to heal and for him to hopefully regain full function.
