History in the Making: Florence Otedola Takes Center Stage at the United Nations General Assembly

Florence Otedola, a well-known Nigerian celebrity; and founder of the Cuppy Music and Cuppy Foundation, popularly known by her fans as DJ Cuppy is gradually becoming a great role model for many women in society as she breaks barriers as the first British Nigerian to host an opening session at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held on the 20th of September 2024.

She is the daughter of Femi Otedola, a Nigerian billionaire and businessman.

She took to her page on X to say: "Today is HUGE for me - the summit of the future is finally here. Join me live as I host at the UN Headquarters and kick off #UNGA 2024 with YOUTH ACTION DAY.

In her opening speech, her allure and prestige were delivered in the most captivating way; setting the mood for the rest of the event, especially with the "cuppy crowd check". "My name is Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, but you can call me Cuppy. I am repping a country called Nigeria, in case you've heard of it. I am a DJ and philanthropist, but also your moderator. But, it feels like I am more of your co-host because today is all about the Youth and I am also honored to be taking you on this journey today, and as they say in my language Yoruba, 'ekabo'. Welcome Everyone. With that, she welcomed her audience to the United Nations Headquarters.

The 2024 UNGA "Summit of the Future" opening ceremony successfully drew to a close with a lively discussion between the moderator and the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed; followed by an insightful Q and A session amongst the youth that sparked interesting responses. The moderator didn't fail to acknowledge the high note on which the event started as he called on DJ Cuppy to end it with that same energy. DJ Cuppy set the stage on fire as she began her playlist with a song by Rema, titled "Ginger Me"

Beyond being an entertainer, Cuppy can be termed an icon of academic excellence. In one of her speeches, she hinted how much she values education and at 30, has 4 university degrees, one of them being from the New York University where she has gone back after 10 years to launch the Cuppy Fund; an opportunity to give back to the African students. This she described as a dream come true.
