Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the Federal House of Representatives representing Aba North and South, is facing serious allegations after a petition was filed by Mr. Steven Abuwatseye, a Bolt driver, through his legal team, Deji Adeyanju & Partners. The incident reportedly occurred on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja, during a food delivery to Ikwechegh’s residence.
According to the petition, Mr. Abuwatseye, upon arrival, requested that the delivery be picked up at the gate, as is standard practice for drivers in Abuja. However, the lawmaker allegedly demanded the delivery be brought inside his premises. When Mr. Abuwatseye refused, the lawmaker reportedly responded with physical aggression, tearing the driver’s clothing and issuing threats, including claims that Mr. Abuwatseye could "disappear" if he reported the incident. Mr. Abuwatseye was subsequently detained at Maitama Police Station, and his vehicle was seized.
In response, Deji Adeyanju & Partners urged the Inspector General of Police to launch an investigation, citing concerns about abuse of power and threats to Mr. Abuwatseye’s safety. The petition stresses that such conduct by a public official is unacceptable, particularly given recent increases in enforced disappearances in the country. A video of the confrontation, attached as evidence, has fueled public debate over the accountability of officials.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command is handling the case, but no official statement has been issued as the investigation proceeds.
